Capturing Moments For A Lifetime

Day Nine Deadhorse Alaska, Prudhoe Bay

June 23rd, 2009 . by len

We leave behind the luxury of our cruise ship and now the real adventure begins. We are about to explore Alaska’s interior starting today with heading out the to tundra up to the Arctic Circle and Prudhoe Bay. There is no internet for several days, we are now going to “rough it” :-)

We will catch up on posts upon our return to civilization :-)

We flew to 250 miles north of the Arctic  Circle, what a difference from the mountains, now we have nothing but tundra and cold, cold winds. We toured the oil fields. There is actually a lot of wildlife here, over 150 species of birds, foxes, musk ox, caribou and many more. We saw tundra swans, lots of birds and a fox! The fox was quick, no pictures.

We went to the Arctic Ocean and took a dip! It was COLD! But we did it :-)

Day Eight Kanai Fjords and National Park

June 23rd, 2009 . by len

Today we left our cruise ship for the second half of our Alaska trek. We went cruising in Kanai in a catamaran in the first storm of the season in the area!

OMG the waves were huge, it was very windy and raining and was quite a scary ride, we had to turn around early due to the bad weather. We really got to experience the Gulf of Alaska as the fishermen do. Not something I really want to do again. Although we could barely see the fjords due to the heavy rain and fog we did get lucky in seeing many, many orca whales. A few pods came together and we were surrounded by them, they were everywhere.

Day Six, Glacier Bay National Park

June 22nd, 2009 . by len

Today was the most amazing cruise through one of the most beautiful places in the world, Glacier Bay. The sounds of the glaciers cracking, watching the calving, the beautiful green/blue water that mirrored the towering glaciers above it, no words or pictures can really capture the magnitude and beauty of this place.

Just another amazing day in Alaska, we are becoming used to being speechless and living in awe every moment of our trip.

Day Five, Haines Eagle Preserve

June 22nd, 2009 . by len

Today we took a trek to Haines Alaska and went by jet river boat through the Eagle Preserve, it was so much fun as we zoomed along taking several stops along the waterway to take in the astounding scenery, listen to the birds and simply enjoy the moment.

Day Four, Wedding on the Taku River

June 20th, 2009 . by len

We got married at the Taku Lodge, on the Taku River right near the Taku Glacier.

It was a magnificent day. These photos were taken by Andrea Watts of Le Petite Studio.

We flew by floatplane from Juneau to the Taku Glacier, the scenery en route was stunning. We had the ceremony across from the Hole in the Wall Glacier. Afterwards we had a genuine alaskan salmon dinner and our wedding cake was triple chocolate of course! It was a beautiful day and we are so glad we came to Alaska to get married :-)

Day Three, Misty Fjords

June 19th, 2009 . by len

Misty Fjords was our destination out of the port of Ketchikan today. After a brisk and scenic ride aboard a jet powered catamaran we where in awe at the breathtaking scenery. We took lots and lots of photos but I have to say that no photo, ours or any we have seen up to now really capture the magnitude and beauty of the fjords or of Alaska in general. Everyone who has been to Alaska has told us this, and now we truly understand what they meant.

It’s simply breathtaking and leaves you speechless. There is a very peaceful silence in Alaska.

Day Two Cruising the Inside Passage of Southeast Alaska

June 18th, 2009 . by len

Queen Charlotte Strait to Grenville Sound   We were lucky to see some Orca’s from the ship about one and a half hours north of Queen Charlotte Sound. The scenery throughout the inside passage was absolutely stunning, massive green mountain ranges topped with mist nestled amongst the fog shrouded shorelines made for scenery that was both amazingly beautiful and eerie at the same time.
